When life is asking too much of you

Work. Relationships. Children. Ageing parents. Changes in health. Retirement. And somewhere among all those responsibilities, your own needs.

You may be capable, caring and accustomed to managing a great deal. But when demands accumulate, even your greatest strengths can begin to work against you.

Your sense of responsibility can become a need to control everything.
Your high standards can become perfectionism.
Your empathy can turn into people-pleasing.
Your ambition can prevent you from slowing down.
Your ability to anticipate problems can become constant worry.

These patterns often develop for good reasons. They may have helped you succeed, care for others or navigate difficult periods in your life. But under pressure, they can affect your decisions, relationships and wellbeing—and unintentionally make life harder for you and the people around you.

The Resilient Mindset Workshop will help you recognise these patterns and begin responding to life with greater awareness, choice and self-compassion.

What is a resilient mindset?

A resilient mindset helps you notice what is happening within you before an automatic reaction takes over.

It creates the space to ask:

  • What is this situation bringing up in me?
  • Is this response helping, or is an old pattern taking control?
  • What do I need right now?
  • What might the other person need?
  • How can I respond in a way that reflects my values?
  • What is within my control?

A resilient mindset does not remove difficult situations. It changes how you meet them.

You become better able to respond with curiosity rather than judgement, establish healthier boundaries, communicate more clearly and make considered decisions—even when reality does not match your expectations.

When strengths begin to sabotage us

Positive Intelligence describes our habitual, unhelpful mental patterns as Saboteurs.

You may recognise some of them:

  • The Judge who constantly criticises you, other people or your circumstances
  • The Controller who feels responsible for making everything go according to plan
  • The Pleaser who puts other people’s needs ahead of their own
  • The Hyper-Achiever who connects personal worth with performance
  • The Stickler who struggles when something is not done perfectly
  • The Avoider who postpones difficult conversations or uncomfortable decisions
  • The Hyper-Vigilant who is continually anticipating what could go wrong
  • The Restless part of you that finds it difficult to slow down or feel satisfied
  • The Hyper-Rational part that relies on logic while overlooking emotions and relationships
  • The Victim who feels powerless, misunderstood or unable to influence the situation

These patterns are not character flaws. They are learned responses that can become stronger during periods of stress, uncertainty and change.

Once you learn to recognise them, you can begin to interrupt them—and choose a response that supports both you and the people around you.

This workshop may be for you if you are…

  • Balancing work with parenting or other family responsibilities.
  • Caring for children and ageing parents at the same time.
  • Feeling responsible for everyone but have little space left for yourself.
  • Experiencing conflict or disconnection in an important relationship.
  • Navigating retirement, a career change or another major life transition.
  • Placing high expectations on yourself and find it difficult to switch off.
  • Noticing yourself becoming controlling, critical, anxious, avoidant or overly accommodating under pressure.
  • Wanting to support others without losing connection with your own needs.
  • Understanding what you “should” do but find old reactions taking over in stressful moments.
  • Wanting practical skills that can help you respond more calmly and intentionally.

You do not need to wait until life becomes overwhelming.
Strengthening resilience now can help you meet both
present and future challenges with greater confidence.

This workshop helped me think of how I react to things and how this can affect myself and my family. It gave me good tools and tips on how to change this into a more conducive behavior. I personally loved the examples Annette shared from her personal life!

Positive Intelligence:
a practical approach to resilience & mental fitness

Positive Intelligence offers a framework for recognising the mental habits that make difficult situations feel even harder.

Instead of believing every critical, fearful or controlling thought, you learn to notice when a Saboteur has taken over. You can then shift towards your Sage capacities: empathy, curiosity, creativity, discernment and purposeful action.

This is not about eliminating uncomfortable emotions or remaining positive all the time. It is about developing the awareness and mental flexibility to choose how you respond.

Like physical fitness, mental fitness develops through small practices repeated consistently over time.
